QUEENS, N.Y. - Head men's soccer coach Dr. Dave Masur has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2008 season. The 18-game slate figures to be one of the toughest schedules in the country.
St. John's will play 12 teams that participated in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, including five of the top 11 national seeds. In fact, 10 of the Red Storm's first 11 contests, including the first seven games of the year, are against tournament teams from a year ago. The schedule also features a nationally televised game on the Fox Soccer Channel and eight home contests, which are all slated to be played at night.
"We will be playing an extremely challenging schedule this season," Masur said. "The BIG EAST sent seven teams to the tournament a year ago and features 16 quality teams that play at a very high level."
Following an exhibition contest against Northwestern, another NCAA Tournament team, on Aug. 23, the Red Storm will open regular season play in Charlottesville, Va., with a pair of games in the Virginia Soccer Classic. St. John's will play host Virginia at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 before matching up against Old Dominion for a 2:30 p.m. contest on Sunday, Aug. 31. St. John's will then travel to Providence, R.I., for the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic. The Red Storm will play host Brown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 and play Boston College at Noon on Sunday, Sept. 7.
St. John's opens play at Belson Stadium on Friday, Sept. 12 with an 8 p.m. contest against Boston University before playing host to Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14.
The Red Storm opens BIG EAST play at Notre Dame with a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday, Sept. 19 and continues with conference play at Marquette with a 12:05 p.m. game on Sunday, Sunday, Sept. 21. The BIG EAST home opener pits St. John's against Connecticut at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26. On Sunday, Sept. 28 St. John's hosts Providence for a 7 p.m. game.
A road game against Louisville at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 is next on the docket before Syracuse comes to Queens for a 7:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and Villanova visits on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
