QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's senior golfer Casey Calmi claimed the top spot at the inaugural Brae Burn Invitational on Monday at the Brae Burn Country Club in Purchase, N.Y. Calmi fired a four-under 140 to finished one stroke ahead in the two round tournament.
"It was definitely a big win for Sevi [Calmi]," said head men's golf coach Frank Darby. "He is having a great summer so far and has really shown tremendous improvement. Casey is showing he is a senior that can be counted upon for next season."
Calmi entered the tournament and started his first round without ever having played the course prior to the first round or even taking a practice round.
"I had never played at Brae Burn before but sometimes it works in your favor," said Calmi. "Without a practice round you can just go out there and hit it."
Calmi did just that, leading the field for almost the entire day. The only hiccup came when official scorers gave Calmi an even-par on the ninth whole when the senior had actually carded a birdie, finding the cup in just four strokes.
"Once everyone was in from the second round they were about to announce that there would be a three-way playoff for the top spot," said Calmi. "However, I knew that I was ahead the whole time so I just played my game and then let the scorers know that they had gotten it wrong when I got back into the clubhouse."
This win continues a streak of hot shooting for Calmi as he recently qualified for the US Amateur Public Links Open Championship next month in Denver. Calmi took sixth overall at Bethpage Blue last week to make the cut for the Open, which is one of the biggest Amateurs in the country for public links.
