QUEENS, N.Y. - Monique McLean scored 15 second-half points, but that was not enough as the St. John's women's basketball team lost to BIG EAST rival Georgetown, 64-48, at Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday night.
McLean got off to a slow start in the game, but got things going in the second half, scoring all of her points to lead the team. The senior was 5-of-15 from the field, 2-of-7 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. With her scoring performance, McLean moved into sixth place on the STJ all-time scoring list with 1,411 points.
Freshman Da'Shena Stevens tied McLean for the team high with seven rebounds, while scoring five points. Sophomore Sky Lindsay, who had seven points, set a new career best with three blocks to lead all players in the game.
For the Hoyas (12-4, 2-1 BIG EAST), Karee Houlette led the way with a game-high 22 points, going 7-of-11 from the field, 3-of-4 from downtown and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Jaleesa Butler and Shanice Fuller chipped in double-figure scoring performances, scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The game got off to a slow start as the teams combined for 10 points through the first five minutes. GU took the early 10-4 lead, but Britney Murphy knocked down a 3 at 11:17 to pull STJ within three, 10-7. After the Hoyas went on a 4-0 run, the Red Storm (13-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) scored 12 unanswered points to take its first lead of the game, 19-14, at 6:42. The teams traded baskets until the Hoyas went on a 9-2 run to close out the stanza with a 32-26 advantage.
The Hoyas built an 11-point lead through the first five minutes of the second half, 40-29. Joy McCorvey hit a quick layup to cut the lead to single digits, but GU answered back by scoring five-straight points to take the 45-31 advantage. After the Hoyas went up 52-37, McLean stole the ball and hit a layup and followed with a trey after a GU turnover to bring STJ within 10 at 6:06, 52-42. The Red Storm could not come any closer as Georgetown held on for the win.
St. John's will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to face Notre Dame on Saturday at 2 p.m.
