QUEENS, N.Y. - Former St. John's men's soccer standout Chris Wingert has been invited to the U.S. Men's National Team training camp. Wingert, the 2003 M.A.C. Hermann trophy winner, is one of 25 players selected by head coach Bob Bradley to train at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., beginning on Jan. 4.
Wingert, the 12th pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, had a career-season in 2008 with Real Salt Lake. The defender set new career-highs in games played (29), games started (29), minutes (2,589), assists (3) and shots on goal (5). Wingert and RSL reached the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in team history and advanced to the Western Conference Final.
This is the fist call-up to a Senior Men's National Team training camp for Wingert. The defender has previously been involved in the U.S. soccer program, playing for the U-23 squad from 2002-04.
The team is preparing for a Jan. 24 friendly against Sweden at The Home Depot Center. The squad will then begin the final round of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup with a Feb. 11 contest against Mexico.
