QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team fell to Marquette despite 12 kills from junior Kun Song on Sunday afternoon in Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm (8-13, 1-4 BIG EAST) also got nine kills from junior Diana Banya, who hit .727 after 11 attempts against the Golden Eagles (12-8, 2-4 BIG EAST).
The Red Storm led 13-8 in the first set, but the Golden Eagles used a 10-5 run to tie it at 18. The score was tied for the final time at 23 after a kill from Banya. Marquette made it 24-23 with a kill from Ciara Jones before an attack error handed the Golden Eagles the set at 25-23.
Tied at 10 in the second, the Golden Eagles surged with an 8-3 run to an 18-13 lead before the Red Storm caught up to come within two at 20-18. A kill from Banya made it 21-19 before Marquette would score four of the next five points to win the second set, 25-20.
Marquette led by as many as nine in the third set, winning it 25-12 and the match, 3-0.
Banya's .727 hitting percentage marks a season-high for the Red Storm in 2009. Song finished with 12 kills, three service aces, three digs and one block. Freshman Ashley Asing tallied a match-high 13 digs for St. John's, while teammate Darlene Ramdin recorded six kills. Freshman setter Gabriela Petkova added 27 assists in the match.
St. John's travels to Villanova on Sunday, Oct. 18 to face off against the Wildcats in BIG EAST action. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Villanova, Pa.
