VILLANOVA, Pa. - The St. John's volleyball team powered past Villanova in the first set, 25-9, before the Wildcats (16-6, 5-3 BIG EAST) slipped past the Red Storm, 3-2 in the match. STJ (8-14, 1-5 BIG EAST) won the first and fourth sets and got 20 kills from sophomore Darlene Ramdin.
The Red Storm took a 14-5 lead in the first set after eight-straight points to force a Villanova timeout. The run continued as STJ would score 16 consecutive points to make it 22-5. The Red Storm would give up just four more points as a kill from Ruisa Scheffel would end the set at 25-9. Ramdin finished the first set with seven kills.
The Wildcats led for the entire second set, winning it, 25-14. The Red Storm got six digs from freshman Gabriela Petkova and four kills form Ramdin. Petkova also tallied seven assists in the set.
St. John's held a late 19-18 lead after avenging the 12th tie-score of the set. The Red Storm surrendered a point before scoring a pair from Ramdin kills. The Wildcats would tie it again at 21 before scoring three more for a 24-21 lead. STJ nabbed its final point from a service error as a Villanova kill would end the set, 25-22, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the match.
With a 7-1 run to make it 20-13, the Red Storm brought home the fourth set, 25-19 on an attacking error.
The Wildcats earned a 10-5 lead in the fifth set after scoring four-straight points. Ramdin would get the final kill before the Wildcats turned their game-point opportunity into a fifth-set win, 15-10.
Ramdin led the Red Storm with 20 kills, while junior Diana Banya also had double-figure kills with 10. Three players had double-digit digs as Petkova finished with 13, Song tallied 15 and freshman libero Ashley Asing recorded 21, a game-high. Song nearly missed the double-double, with nine kills.
St. John's returns home next weekend for an 11 a.m. match against the Connecticut Huskies on Oct. 24 in Carnesecca Arena before flying back to USF to make up a postponed match from Oct. 4.
