TAMPA, Fla. - The St. John's volleyball team came back from a 17-10 deficit in the third set to force extra points, but fell to USF (13-6, 6-3 BIG EAST) 3-0 in Tampa Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm (8-16, 1-7 BIG EAST) got double-digit kill performances from junior Kun Song and sophomore Darlene Ramdin.
In the third set, the Red Storm returned from a 17-10 deficit, assembling a 7-2 run to come within two at 19-17. STJ would score three of the next four points to tie it at 20 before trading points to finish the set. Neither team led by more than a point until the Bulls scored the 28th and 29th points consecutively to win the set, 29-27, and the match, 3-0.
Ramdin tallied four kills in the first set, while Song notched three. Each would finish with 10 kills. Song also recorded seven digs. Freshman Ashley Asing added a match-high nine digs for STJ, while fellow rookie Gabriela Petkova had 23 assists. Freshman Nalani I registered a pair of assists in the second set after setting up teammates Ruisa Scheffel and Ramdin for the final Red Storm kills of the second set.
St. John's returns to action on Friday, Oct. 30 at home in Queens against Pittsburgh for the first match of the weekend at 7 p.m. The Red Storm will face West Virginia in its home finale on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.
