QUEENS, N.Y. - Two extra-point sets highlighted Friday night's match as the St. John's volleyball team fell to Pittsburgh, 3-0 (25-27, 24-26, 19-25) in BIG EAST action at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm (8-17, 1-8 BIG EAST) got 16 kills from junior Kun Song while junior Diana Banya and sophomore Darlene Ramdin each added 10 apiece. The Panthers, ranked fourth in the BIG EAST, move to 16-8 overall and 8-2 in BIG EAST play.
The Red Storm had the Panthers on the ropes in set one, leading 23-17 late in the set. Pitt came back to tie it at 24 before a Ramdin kill regained the lead for St. John's. The Panthers scored the final three consecutive points to win the battle in the first set, 27-25.
In set two, the Red Storm tied it at 23 on a kill from Banya. Song followed with a point, but the Panthers would have the last word with a pair of kills from Imani Harper. Ramdin, Ruisa Scheffel, and Banya each had four kills in the set as STJ surrendered to Pitt, 26-24.
Pitt would lead for the entire third set and captured the match, 3-0, after a 25-19 third set win.
Song led the Red Storm with a match-high 16 kills and six digs. Ramdin and Banya each finished with 10 kills, while freshman Ashley Asing tallied a match-high 16 digs. Rookie Gabriela Petkova brought home a double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs, while recording three kills and two blocks. Scheffel also added eight kills.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday in Queens, hosting West Virginia in its 2009 home finale. The Red Storm will celebrate the accomplishments of seniors Scheffel and Jia Yue Zhai prior to the 2 p.m. start.
