QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team defeated West Virginia, 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23) on Sunday in Queens for its second BIG EAST win of the season. The Red Storm got 23 kills from Darlene Ramdin, while Diana Banya and Kun Song each added 11.
Tied at 22 in the first set, the Red Storm gained a 24-22 lead after a pair of Mountaineer errors. A kill from Ramdin would avenge an STJ attacking error and hand St. John's the set, 25-23.
The Red Storm would score six of the final seven points in the second set after being down 20-19 to win it, 25-21. Song tallied four kills in the set as teammate Ramdin notched five to lead STJ in the second set as the Red Storm hit .323.
An attack error tied the score at 22 in the third set as the Red Storm looked to sweep the Mountaineers, but West Virginia scored two consecutive points to take a 24-22 lead. A kill from Banya would be the final third-set point for the Red Storm as the Mountaineers took the set, 25-23.
The Red Storm would trail by as many as four in the fourth set before coming from behind to knot the score at 19. Two kills from Ramdin and a service ace by Song paved the way for St. John's down the stretch, winning the fourth set, 25-23 to take the match, 3-1.
Song finished with her 12th double-double of the season, recording 11 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Gabriela Petkova had four kills in five attempts, while tallying 47 assists and 11 digs for the Red Storm. Ashley Asing led the St. John's defense with a match-high 18 digs. Ramdin's 23 kills marks her third 20-plus kill performance in BIG EAST action this season.
