Barnes Arico One Win Away From 200
• Head coach Kim Barnes Arico will look to capture her 200th-career victory against Stony Brook on Sunday. She has an overall record of 199-178 and enters her 14th season of coaching in 2009-10. Last season, Barnes Arico became the fourth Red Storm women's basketball coach to reach 100 wins and the ninth basketball coach - men's and women's - at St. John's to accomplish the feat. She reached the milestone on Feb. 1, 2009, thanks to an 89-84 win over Seton Hall.
All-Time Season Openers
• St. John's has fared well all-time in its season-opening contests, posting a 24-11 slate since its inaugural season in 1974-75. The Red Storm has notched an 11-4 record at home, a 6-4 record on the road and a 7-3 record at neutral sites. The Red Storm has won five of its last six season-opening games, including a 70-52 win over Northeastern in last year's opener on Nov. 14, 2008, at Carnesecca Arena.
History Lesson
• St. John's and Stony Brook meet for the ninth time in history. The Red Storm has won every meeting except one, posting a 7-1 mark all-time, including a 3-1 slate at home and a 4-0 record on the road. Last year the teams met at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 28, 2008, and St. John's came away with the 61-49 victory.
Scouting The Seawolves
• Stony Brook opened the 2009-10 campaign on Friday with a 68-43 loss to Princeton at home. The Seawolves had one player reach double figures in scoring and rebounding. Kirsten Jeter led the team with 11 points, going 5-of-15 from the field and 1-of-1 from long range. She also grabbed eight boards, the second highest on the team. Destiny Jacobs led the squad in rebounding with 10, including five offensive and five defensive.
Stevens Named To Preseason Team
• Da'Shena Stevens was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team. Stevens, the 2009 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, was the Red Storm's second-leading scorer last season, averaging 11.9 points, and she was the team's defensive leader, grabbing a team-high 6.6 rebounds per contest while posting 35 blocks. Stevens, who led all BIG EAST freshmen in scoring, played in all 34 games, while starting in 31 in 2008-09.
McManmon Close To Holding Record
• Kelly McManmon is only 23 treys away from breaking the St. John's career 3-point record held by Monique McLean with 172. McManmon entered the record books last season after connecting on 91 treys to put her two-year total at 150. Her 91 3s last year were the second highest in a season for a Red Storm player.
STJ Returns To MSG
• After posting a perfect 2-0 slate at the "The World's Most Famous Arena," in 2008-09, the Red Storm will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts USF at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 23 at 2:30 p.m. The game is a doubleheader with the men's team, who host Villanova at noon. The women's basketball team has had much success at MSG, posting a 5-1 slate all time at the storied venue.
