Storm Surges To 82-52 Win Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - Da'Shena Stevens scored a game-high 17 points and three other players reached double-figures in scoring as the St. John's women's basketball team posted an 82-52 win over Massachusetts on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
Stevens led the team in scoring for the second-straight time this season with her 17-point performance, 11 coming in the final half. The sophomore was 8-of-14 from the field and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. She also came close to posting a double-double with nine rebounds in the game.
Centhya Hart had the best scoring performance of her career, coming off the bench and scoring a personal best 14 points. The junior was 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Freshmen Shenneika Smith and Eugeneia McPherson had strong offensive performances in the contest. Smith recorded her second-straight double-figure scoring game of the season with 12 points, going 5-of-14 from the field, 1-of-3 from long distance and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. McPherson tallied her first-career double-digit scoring effort with 11 points. The North Babylon, N.Y., native was 4-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from long distance.
Defensively, senior Joy McCorvey dominated on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds, five offensive and six defensive.
With UMass (1-1) taking a 7-4 lead to open the game, the Red Storm scored 11 unanswered points to jump ahead 15-7 at 13:06. The teams traded baskets for a while before STJ (2-0) closed out the half on a 21-9 run to take a 40-23 lead. Hart and Smith combined for 12 points during that span.
Out of the break, UMass chipped into the Red Storm lead, eventually cutting the deficit to 13, 48-35, when Cerie Mosgrove hit a trey at 13:02. St. John's offense quickly gained its momentum and took a 25-point lead when Sky Lindsay drained a jumper at the 8:31 mark. The Red Storm continued to surge and the deficit proved too big for the Minutewomen overcome.
St. John's will return to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday for its home opener when it welcomes Boston University at 2 p.m.
