QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball player and Naismith Trophy preseason watch list honoree Da'Shena Stevens has been named to the BIG EAST honor roll as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Stevens, the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, helped the Red Storm get off to a perfect 3-0 start this season, clinching victories over Stony Brook, 89-52, on Nov. 15, UMass, 82-52, on Nov. 18 and Boston University, 80-63, on Nov. 21. Her play also keyed St. John's to receive votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll in week No. 1 and No. 2.
A native of Stamford, Conn., Stevens picked up right where she left off last season in the Red Storm's opener at Stony Brook with a game-high 22 points. She was 9-of-10 from the field, and added three rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes of play.
The sophomore went on to lead the team for the second-straight game at UMass when she scored 17 points and nearly recorded a double-double with nine rebounds. She had an 8-of-14 performance from the field and a 1-of-2 effort from the charity stripe.
In the home opener against BU, Stevens recorded her third-straight double-figure scoring effort with a team-high 15 points. She also finished as the team's second-leading rebounder with eight in the contest. Stevens was 7-of-10 from the field and 1-of-3 from the charity stripe.
Stevens and the Red Storm will look to extend its win streak when STJ travels to play in the FIU Tournament Nov. 27-29. St. John's will open action facing Florida on Friday at 7 p.m., and will play either FIU or St. Joseph's on Sunday at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.
