QUEENS, N.Y. - With the 2010 season a few months away, the St. John's softball team has been active in the community this fall, visiting the sick and less fortunate in neighboring areas and participating in charitable donation drives and fundraisers.
"Playing an active role in the community is very important to our team," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said.
In September, the Red Storm took part in a Soles4Soles shoe drive, donating shoes for those less fortunate around the world. On Sept. 29, sophomores Jenna Berger, Kristi Cady and Julia Sanchez and freshmen Dominique Marcelino, Jordan Tingley, Chrissy Montez and Katie Mason participated in a "run" for Midnight Run, preparing and delivering meals and clothing for the poor in New York.
The team participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, running in the Eighth Annual STJ Campus Breast Cancer Awareness Fun Run on Sept. 30 and the Fun Run for Breast Cancer, sponsored by the Red Storm women's cross country team, on Oct. 18.
STJ softball also made it a point to serve the elderly in October through the Queens Friendly Visitor Program. Berger and Cady led the way for the Red Storm, visiting with elderly Alzheimer patients on Oct. 13 and providing companionship for a woman at her house on Oct. 21. On Oct. 27, Senior Stacia Dopudja and junior Kacee Cox did household chores for the elderly.
On Oct. 30, the entire St. John's softball team celebrated Halloween with patients at St. Mary's Children's Hospital (Bayside, N.Y.). The players played games with children whose medical conditions prevented them from leaving the hospital for Halloween.
"Every year our team looks forward to visiting the children's hospital to play games and spend time with the children for Halloween," Kvilhaug said. "Not only is it a great way to give back to less fortunate children of the community, it also serves as a reminder for everyone to appreciate things like good health that are often taken for granted."
The Red Storm has more planned community service events coming up this month. The team plans to serve those in need at a local Ronald McDonald House on Nov. 11 and at St. Nick's Men's Shelter on Nov. 17 in Queens.
