Shenneika Smith Named BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball player Shenneika Smith was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week as announced by the league.
The rookie had strong offensive performances this past week to lead the Red Storm to a 2-0 record and to the St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic Championship. She averaged 14.0 points to finish as the team's second-leading scorer, and grabbed 4.0 rebounds per game. Starting in both contests and averaging 25.5 minutes of play, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native earned St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team honors for her efforts.
In a 79-47 win against Texas-Arlington on Saturday, Smith sparked St. John's offense with 10 first-half points and finished with 14. She was 7-of-14 from the field and filled up the stat sheet with four rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals.
In the championship game on Sunday with Virginia Tech, she helped lead the team to the tournament title with a 14-point performance in the 75-62 victory. She scored eight points in the second half and was perfect from the free-throw line with a 4-of-4 effort. The guard also contributed four rebounds in the win.
On the year, Smith has started in all 12 games for the Red Storm and is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 12.3 points. She has recorded a team-high 13 blocks this year, and is grabbing 4.8 rebounds per game.
The Red Storm, off to an 11-1 start this season, will look to continue its winning streak on Dec. 29 when it travels to face Northeastern at 2 p.m.
