Women's Basketball Receives Votes In Both Top 25 Polls

QUEENS, N.Y. - Thanks to an 11-1 start this season, including posting a 2-0 mark last week, the St. John's women's basketball team received votes in this week's Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Polls.
Coming off victories over Texas-Arlington and Virginia Tech en route to the Chartwells Holiday Classic Championship, the Red Storm earned 24 points in the AP Poll to rank 30th nationally, moving up from earning 18 points last week. STJ has received votes in the AP Poll every week of the regular season. The Red Storm continued to be recognized in the Coaches Poll this week and received a season-high 19 points to rank 30th nationally, moving up from 15 points last week.
The Red Storm posted a 79-47 victory over Texas-Arlington on Dec. 19 in day one of the St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic. Kelly McManmon had her best offensive game of the year, leading the team in scoring for the first time this season with 15 points. Shenneika Smith and Da'Shena Stevens each contributed 14 points in the win. Eugeneia McPherson posted her fourth double-digit scoring effort of the year with 11 points. Senior Joy McCorvey and junior Centhya Hart had strong rebounding performances. McCorvey grabbed 11 rebounds and came close to a double-double with eight points. Off the bench, Hart finished as the second-leading rebounder with nine in the contest.
St. John's captured the Holiday Classic Championship with a 75-62 win over Virginia Tech on Dec. 20. McCorvey posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Stevens was the team's leading scorer with 15 points. Smith had another strong scoring performance, tying McCorvey as the team's second-leading scorer with 14 points. Sky Lindsay turned it on in the final frame, scoring 10 points in the second half to finish with 12.
The Red Storm will wrap up non-conference action on Dec. 29 when it travels to face Northeastern at 2 p.m.
