LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Da'Shena Stevens scored a team-high 14 points and Sky Lindsay chipped in 10, but that was not enough for the St. John's women's basketball team as the No. 8/9 Louisville Cardinals came away with the 89-60 win on Tuesday night at Freedom Hall.
Stevens scored in double-digits for the 17th time this season. The freshman was 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. A native of Stamford, Conn., Stevens grabbed a team-high six rebounds and tied for the lead with two steals.
Lindsay posted her fourth-straight double-figure scoring performance and her 10th this season. The sophomore was 3-of-10 from the field, 1-of-3 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She recorded two steals in the contest to tie Stevens and Joy McCorvey for the team high.
Off the bench, Aricia Mitchell had a strong game for the Red Storm, scoring seven points in 11 minutes of action. The junior was 2-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to finish as STJ's third-leading scorer.
For Louisville (24-3, 11-2 BIG EAST), Angel McCoughtry recorded a double-double to lead the team with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
St. John's (15-10, 3-9 BIG EAST) opened the game taking an 8-5 lead thanks to Stevens' two hard-fought layups. Louisville did not stay down for long and scored 12 unanswered points to jump in front, 17-8. McCoughtry scored nine UofL points during that run. The Red Storm cut the deficit to eight when Mitchell stole the ball and hit a layup on a fast break at 8:11. The Cardinals went on an 18-10 run to close out the half with a 41-25 lead.
After Louisville went up 19 at 17:17 in the second frame, the Red Storm went on a 7-2 run to come within 14, 51-37, at 14:08. Rookie Britney Murphy keyed the run with a jumper and accounted for four points during that stretch. That was the closest St. John's would come in the final half as the Cardinals came away with the league win.
The Red Storm will continue its road trip on Saturday when it travels to face Marquette at 4 p.m.
