Sumrall And Struble Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

QUEENS, N.Y. - Sophomore starter Linzee Sumrall was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and senior Roxy Struble was selected to the BIG EAST Honor Roll as announced by the Conference on Monday. Sumrall paced the Red Storm (6-3) last week, leading the team to a 3-1 record and a tournament title at the Longwood Leadoff Classic in Farmville, Va. Struble was selected to the honor roll for the second-straight week, leading the Red Storm offense in batting average and RBI's.
Sumrall was dominant versus Bucknell and Longwood, allowing only five hits while recording two complete-game shutouts. Against the Bison of Bucknell, the Denham Springs, La., native struck out a career-high 13 batters. In the championship game vs. Longwood, Sumrall blanked the host team, striking out nine while allowing only two hits as St. John's took the title. The conference award is STJ's first since Lisa Geer in 2006.
Struble recorded her second-straight week with a home run and six RBI, and leads the Red Storm in nearly every offensive category. Struble finished the week with a .429 batting average (6-for-14). The honor roll selection is the fourth of her career.
Next up, the St. John's softball team travels to Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, Feb. 27 to play in the Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by NC State. The Red Storm will face College of Charleston at noon and Buffalo at 4:30 p.m. of Friday, Canisius at 3:30 p.m. and a rematch vs. C of C at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, before ending the tournament with NC State on Sunday March 1, at 1 p.m.
