VILLANOVA, Pa. - Monique McLean came close to recording a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, but that was not enough as Villanova came away with the 49-33 win over the St. John's women's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Pavilion.
McLean was the lone double-figure scorer for the Red Storm. The senior was 4-of-19 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Her nine rebounds - four offensive and five defensive - tied for the game high. Joy McCorvey also came close to recording a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. The junior was 3-of-4 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
For Villanova, Siobhan O'Connor led the way with 17 points and Laura Kurz added 14.
The Red Storm (14-7, 2-6 BIG EAST) opened the game on a 13-2 run that spanned close to nine minutes. Villanova (14-8, 6-2 BIG EAST) answered by going on a 16-2 run to take the lead, 18-15, at 6:44. After Da'Shena Stevens connected on a free throw, McLean grabbed an offensive rebound on the next STJ possession and nailed a jumper to tie the score. The teams traded baskets and the Wildcats went into the break with the 24-20 lead.
The game remained close in the opening minutes of the second half. At the 14:37 mark, VU went on a 17-6 run to build a 12-point lead, 43-31. The Red Storm could not come any closer as Villanova came away with the win.
