QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
Opening Statement:
"I was really happy with the way we came out in the second half. I thought we were a little sluggish in the first half and Harvard did a nice job on us. We showed a little fire and intensity in the second half and hopefully we can take that forward to Hartford."
On the difference between the first and second half:
"We had the opportunity to do that in the first half, but we missed a lot of easy buckets. Then they would come down in transition and score. They scored those 3's in transition and our defensive transition was struggling a little bit. We missed the easy baskets which resulted in their easy baskets down the other way. In the start of the second half, we made those. We got to the basket a little more. Instead of settling for jumpers, we were just trying to get to the basket."
On Da'Sheena Steven's shots in the second half:
"Sometimes she has a nice soft touch and she has a nice little jumper around the basket. Sometimes she settles for that. They are big, but we are quicker. So our game plan was to try to get our post players to face up and rip and try to go around them, as Recee [Aricia Mitchell] did and Coco [Centhya Hart] and Joy [McCorvey] tried to do. Once Da'Sheena did that, she had a little more success."
Sophomore guard Sky Lindsay
On playing in the WNIT:
"We're going to look at this tournament as if we were in the NCAAs. We're going to play every game hard as if it was the NCAA Tournament."
On Harvard's run in the second half:
"Basketball is game of runs, and eventually the team is going to have a little run. It's a matter of how you bounce back from it. It took us two minutes or so but we bounced back pretty well and got focused."
On playing Hartford:
"Last year it was a close game, we lost by just one or two. This year we are going to make sure we don't keep it as close and we have to extend the lead early, so it doesn't go down to a close game. It will be good to get revenge."
Freshman Da'Shena Stevens
On the game:
"We were slow getting out to the shooters. We started off a little sluggish. Once we started finding the shooters and getting out and contesting their shots I think we were able to run on them a little bit in the second half."
On STJ's rebounding efforts:
"Because we're not that big, it has to be a team effort. All three or four of us have to get in there and rebound. With Recee [Aricia Mitchell] coming in off the bench and picking up on rebounding and CoCo [Centhya Hart] getting in there too, I think it has to be a team effort and that's what we did."
On shooting in the second half:
"I was able to convert some shots better in the second half. I was able to finish and open up the game for us."
