QUEENS, N.Y. - High winds and heavy rains cancelled the first round of the Princeton Invitational, but the Red Storm played through tough conditions and used two top-15 finishes to place sixth at the event. The rain-shortened two-round event was held at the par-71, 6,390 yard Springdale Golf Course in Princeton, N.J.
St. John's (49-over 617) was led by senior Kevin Velardo who carded a 8-over 150 and finished in a tie for eighth overall. Velardo used a second round 73 to charge 21 spots up the leaderboard from his 29th position at the end of day one.
Junior co-captain Mike Ballo Jr. chipped in a top-15 finish, as he finished just outside the top-10 with a 9-over 151 to tie for 11th.
Other captain Evan Beirne made his season debut as he returned from injury and got valuable time on the greens a week before the BIG EAST Championship. Beirne finished with an 18-over 160.
Head coach Frank Darby and the St. John's men's golf squad now head to Tampa, Fla. for the BIG EAST Championship on April 19-21.
