QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team will take the field this fall for eight exhibition games. The Red Storm will play four games at home and four on the road in preseason action that will help determine the makeup of the team for the 2010 spring season.
"The fall is really a time to develop and implement our philosophies and what we're expecting of the girls and to get our players to play together," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said. "It's about getting better. This is just kind of game competition time to do that."
St. John's hosts the annual St. John's Fall Tournament this weekend that will welcome Fairleigh Dickinson, St. Peter's, Manhattan College, and Sacred Heart to Red Storm Field. The team will face FDU and St. Peter's on Sept. 19 and Manhattan and Sacred Heart on Sept. 20.
The Red Storm will play its first road contest of the fall at Long Island University on Sept. 24 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The team will host its annual Alumni Game on Sept. 26 and its 4th Annual 100-Out Fundraiser Game on Sept. 27.
St. John's will take part in the Fordham Fall Tournament on Oct. 3 in Bronx, N.Y., facing Fordham and Sacred Heart. The team will conclude its fall schedule against Hofstra on Oct. 10 at Hempstead, N.Y.
The Red Storm has a good mix of experience and fresh faces as the team returns 10 letterwinners from last season, including junior aces and 2009 BIG EAST strikeout leaders Kat Lawrence and Linzee Sumrall, and welcomes five highly-touted freshmen.
"We're looking to get the freshmen some quality playing time at this level and just get everybody back into the swing of things," Kvilhaug said.
