Red Storm Trounces Big Red, 3-0

ITHACA, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team rebounded in the second round of the Cornell Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of the Cornell Big Red in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday. The Red Storm (6-8) hit .224 as a team to defeat the Big Red (2-6).
A kill by Darlene Ramdin gave STJ a 12-6 lead in the first set, with the Red Storm later pushing to a 19-11 advantage. The Big Red launched an 8-4 run to make it 22-19 late in the set. A kill by Ramdin and back-to-back kills from Kun Song earned the win, 24-19, in the first set for St. John's.
The Big Red took its first lead of the match at 7-6 in the second stanza, but St. John's battled from behind to regain the lead at 17-16. The Red Storm owned a 23-20 lead after a final Cornell timeout and went on to win the set, 25-20 after two CU attack errors.
STJ took its first decisive lead of the third set at 21-17 on behalf of three straight kills from Song and Ramdin. The Big Red returned with a pair of kills to bring it to 21-19 before Ramdin pounded a kill. Two Cornell attack errors and a final kill by Ramdin won the match, 3-0 and the set, 25-20.
Ramdin led the team with 16 kills, while Song also tallied double-digits with 10. Freshman Ashley Asing recorded 13 digs in the match, while fellow rookie Gabriela Petkova had 32 assists.
The Red Storm will face Colgate this evening at 5 p.m. in the final round of the Cornell Invitational.
