St. John's Splits Final Two Games of Fall Tournament

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm softball team came away with one win and one loss on Sunday in the second set of games of the St. John's Fall Tournament at Red Storm Field.
St. John's took down Manhattan 3-0 in the first game led offensively by freshman Chrissy Montez and senior Shauntaine Harris, who each went 2-for-3 from the plate. Montez drove in two of the Red Storm's three runs.
"I think this tournament really was a good opener for us to see what we need to work on, and we did a great job," Harris said. "I'm really excited about the upcoming season and I think this is going to be a great team this year."
Junior pitcher Linzee Sumrall tossed five scoreless innings of two-hit ball against Manhattan with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Jordan Tingley came in for some relief work in the sixth closed out the game with two hitless innings, three strikeouts and one walk.
STJ's Kat Lawrence and Sacred Heart's Jen Russell were locked in a pitchers duel in STJ's second game of the day before the Pioneers edged the Red Storm, 1-0. The game remained scoreless through the first six innings before Lawrence yielded an unearned run in the top of the seventh. Lawrence posted nine strikeouts over seven innings, giving up two hits and two walks.
Over its four games in the St. John's Fall Tournament, the Red Storm trio of Lawrence, Sumrall and Tingley dominated from the pitcher's circle. The group struck out a combined 25 batters over 25 innings while holding opposing teams to just seven hits and two unearned runs.
The St. John's softball team continues exhibition play on Sept. 24 when it travels to Brooklyn, N.Y., to face Long Island University at 7 p.m. The Red Storm will play its annual Alumni Game at Red Storm Field on Sept. 26 at noon.
