QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team fell to the visiting Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 3-0, in Taffner Field House Sunday afternoon despite a combined 22 kills from junior Diana Banya and sophomore Darlene Ramdin. The Red Storm moves to 8-10 (1-1 BIG EAST) on the season while Notre Dame improves to 8-4 on the year and 2-0 in conference play.
Notre Dame captured the first set, 25-11, before the Red Storm came back in the second set, tying the score at 22 after a run late in the set. A kill by Diana Banya knotted the score again at 23 and a kill by Ramdin did the same for the 24th point before the Irish got the final two points of the set, winning the second stanza, 26-24.
STJ battled the Irish for points in set three, tying the score four times before the 10th point, where Notre Dame gained a lead it would not relinquish, as it went on to win the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
Banya finished with nine kills, leading the team in hitting percentage at .368. Ramdin tallied 13 kills and one service ace for the Red Storm, while freshman Gabriela Petkova recorded 25 assists. Junior Kayla Motoyama and freshman Ashley Asing each had eight digs to lead the team.
St. John's travels to Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 2 for its first BIG EAST road game of the season. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
