Carrillo, Clack Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

QUEENS, N.Y. - Redshirt seniors Derby Carrillo and Ben Clack each earned BIG EAST men's soccer weekly honors for the opening weekend of play. Carrillo was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, while Clack earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors. St. John's (1-0-1) won the 2009 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, posting a pair of shutouts against No. 7/4 Indiana and No. 12/10 Notre Dame.
Carrillo made three saves in a season opening scoreless draw against Indiana before making a career-high four saves in a 2-0 win against the Fighting Irish. The keeper made the biggest save of the weekend against Notre Dame, stopping a penalty kick in the 16th minute. The conference honor for Carrillo is the first of his career.
Clack, meanwhile, earns Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career. The defender played all 200 minutes on the weekend, helping lead a defensive unit that allowed just seven shots on goal in two games.
Six players also earned adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament honors. Junior Sverre Wegge Gundhus was named the Offensive MVP after scoring the game-winner against Notre Dame, while senior Joel Gustafsson earned Defensive MVP honors. Carrillo, Clack, Connor Lade and David Reed, meanwhile, were each named to the All-Tournament team.
Gustafsson was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.
