QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's freshman point guard Nadirah McKenith is one of 12 national women's basketball standouts on the initial list of 2010 "Players Making The Buzz" for the Nancy Lieberman Award.
The annual award recognizes the nation's top point guard in Division I women's basketball and is sponsored by the Detroit Rotary Club. The criteria for the award are the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career. Sportswriters from across the country determine the award winner and finalists, who will be announced in April.
McKenith has made an immediate impact at the point position for St. John's, winning the starting job after the fifth game of the season. The Newark, N.J., native is leading the team in assists, averaging 4.4 per game. Through 14 games, she is averaging 25.0 minutes, 7.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.0 steals.
A native of Newark, N.J., McKenith has posted three double-digit scoring games this season. She tallied a career-high seven assists against Texas-Arlington on Dec. 19 and went on to score a career-high 15 points over Northeastern on Dec. 29. On the season, the freshman has dished out five or more assists in nine of STJ's 14 games.
