Red Storm Takes Second Place At Big 5 Championship

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Fifth-year senior Evan Beirne notched his third consecutive top-5 finish and St. John's men's golf team tied for the best second-round team score with a 10-over 290 on Sunday en route to a second-place showing in the Big 5 Championship at Plymouth Country Club.
The Red Storm finished play at 22-over 582, eight strokes back of tournament champion Furman, which won with the 21-team event with a 14-over 574. St. John's, coming off back-to-back wins in the Hartford Hawk Invitational (Sept. 27-28) and The MacDonald Cup (Oct. 2-3), has now finished second or better in three straight tournaments.
Beirne matched his first-round score with a 1-over 71 on Sunday to finish at 2-over 142 and tie for fifth. The St. John's captain finished nine strokes back of Furman's Matthew Broome, who led 111-player field with a 66-67-133 (-7). Beirne finished the tournament with five birdies and bookended his play Sunday with birdies on holes no. 1 and 18.
The Red Storm also benefited from top-20 showings by Mark Costanza and Pat Wilson. Costanza tied for 16th after shooting 73-72-145 (+5). The St. John's senior finished strong on Sunday, shooting 2-under on the back nine with birdies on holes 14 and 15 and an eagle on 18. Costanza, who has placed in the top 20 in each of STJ's four tournaments this year, totaled four birdies and one eagle on the weekend.
Wilson used a final-round, 1-over 71 to bring his total to 6-over 146 and tie for 19th. The sophomore totaled five birdies in the final round and went as low as 2-under when he opened the back nine with birdies on holes 10, 11 and 13. Wilson has finished in the top 20 in each of the Red Storm's last three tournaments.
Freshman Ryan McCormick tied for 36th after carding a 73-76-149 (+9). McCormick birdied the first hole on Sunday and finished the tournament with three birdies.
Sophomore Peter Ballo tied for 57th after shooting 76-76-152 (+12). Ballo notched two birdies in the final round and led the team with six for the tournament.
The Red Storm will round out its fall golf season as the host of the Mission Inn Intercollegiate held Oct. 22-24. This year's tournament will take place at Mission Inn's Las Colinas Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. St. John's took fifth in the 2009 Mission Inn Intercollegiate on the resort's El Campéon Course. Ballo tied for second in last year's event after carding a 76-66-70-212 (-1).
