St. John's Continues Road Swing At Conference Rival UConn

QUEENS, N.Y. - After having its match pushed back one day due to scheduling conflicts, the St. John's volleyball team continues its BIG EAST Conference road swing with a matchup at conference rival Connecticut on Sunday. The Red Storm will look to snap a six-match losing streak and pick up its first win in the conference when it takes on the Huskies at 5:30 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion.
The Red Storm is 13-9 overall, including 0-5 in BIG EAST conference play entering Sunday's match. St. John's fell to Marquette and Syracuse in straight sets last weekend. Junior captain Darlene Ramdin led the Red Storm with 18 kills on the weekend for an average of three kills per set. Paulina Piegza and Diana Banya each added 11 kills, and junior transfer Alyssa Bennett notched 51 total assists.
The Huskies (2-14, 0-5) are also looking for their first BIG EAST victory of the season on Sunday. After winning its first two matches of the season, UConn has lost 14 straight. The Huskies are led by senior outside hitter Rebecca Murray's 144 kills. Murray just recently picked up the 1,000th kill of her career when she registered 13 against Syracuse.

STORMWATCH
The Red Storm has relied on a balanced attack this season, as five athletes have recorded 125 kills or more.
Four members of the squad are averaging over 2.22 kills per set and five Red Storm athletes are averaging over 2.0 points per set (min. 50 sets).
Junior captain Darlene Ramdin is the focal point of the Red Storm attack, recording a team-high .229 hitting percentage (min. 100 attempts) and averaging 3.08 points per set.
Ramdin also leads the team at the net, tallying a team-high 74 blocks (22 solo, 52 assisted).
Lukjanska is currently leading the squad in kills with 169 and is second on the team with 165 digs.
Sophomore setter Gabriela Petkova has a team-high 564 assists and is averaging 8.42 per set.
Kronbauer currently leads the team with 28 service aces.
Freshman libero Korina Yee has recorded a team-high 211 digs and is one of two players (Lukjanska) to play in all 76 sets.
THE MATCHUP
The Huskies hold a 10-7 all-time advantage over the Red Storm.
St. John's is 3-5 on the road against UConn.
14 of the 17 matchups have ended in three sets and the other three have all needed five frames to decide a winner.
After winning five-straight matches from 2003-08, the Red Storm lost to UConn in five sets a season ago.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Connecticut went 0-2 last weekend, losing matches to both Syracuse and Marquette by a score of 1-3. The Huskies are currently in the midst of a 14-match losing streak after winning the opening two of the season.
UConn's two victories came against Hartford and Brown.
Murray leads the Huskies with 144 kills, while Jordan Kirk has registered 119 on the season.
The Huskies are an excellent serving team, averaging 1.84 aces per set, good for second in the conference.
Murray currently leads the team with 32 total aces, for an average of 0.58 per set.
That average currently leads the BIG EAST and ranks 14th in the nation.
Kelsey Maving, the UConn libero, is currently third in the conference and 49th in the nation with an average of 4.96 digs per set.
Maving most recently posted her fifth 20+ dig match of the season with 24 against Marquette on Sunday.
UP NEXT
St. John's will return home to host Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 22, for its annual Dig For The Cure Match at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm currently leads the all-time series 9-7 over the Scarlet Knights.
After losing three consecutive shutouts to the Red Storm, Rutgers snapped the losing streak with a 3-2 victory a season ago.
