QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball player Shenneika Smith was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Smith led the Red Storm to a perfect 2-0 mark last week and helped extend the team's winning streak to five games. She finished as STJ's leading scorer, averaging 18.0 points per game, and her perfect 8-of-8 effort from the free throw line was the team best. She also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks.
The rookie led the Red Storm to a thrilling 68-65 victory over Syracuse on Wednesday, scoring a career- and game-high 28 points, including knocking down the game-tying and go-ahead free throws with seven seconds left in regulation. She scored 18 points in the crucial second half, including scoring seven of the last 12 points for the Red Storm. She was perfect from the free-throw line, going 8-of-8, setting a new personal mark in free throws made. She also grabbed four rebounds, posted two steals and tallied a block and an assist.
Smith was a key contributor in STJ's 70-46 win over Providence on Saturday, scoring eight points, grabbing five rebounds and posting two blocks and one steal.
With the pair of victories, the Red Storm improved its record to 18-3, 6-2 BIG EAST. The 18-3 start is the best under the direction of eighth-year head coach Kim Barnes Arico.
The Red Storm will open a two-game road trip on Tuesday when it travels to face Georgetown at 8 p.m.
