QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball player Nadirah McKenith was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
McKenith led the Red Storm to a 91-56 win over Louisville on Wednesday and helped STJ play the No. 1/1 team in the nation, UConn, the closest it had been played all year in conference games on Saturday. She finished the week leading the team in scoring, averaging 13.5 points, and shot 50.0 percent from the field (12-of-24) and a perfect 1.000 percent from the free-throw line (3-of-3). She nearly averaged a double-double with a team-high-tying 7.0 rebounds per game, and averaged a team-leading 5.0 assists and 4.5 steals.
Against Louisville, McKenith scored 12 points, shot 66.7 percent from the field, and added seven assists, seven steals and three boards. She helped STJ pick up only its second win in history over the Cardinals.
On Saturday, McKenith posted her first-career double-double with a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds against No. 1/1 UConn. Her points tied her career high, while her rebounding total set a new personal best. She also had three assists, two steals and no turnovers against the Huskies' pressure defense in 33 minutes of action.
Her fast-tempo style of play at the point position sparked STJ's offense that caused the second-lowest margin of victory of the season for undefeated UConn, and her defensive play also helped hold the Huskies to its lowest point total of the year in the 66-52 decision for UConn.
The Red Storm will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts No. 4 Notre Dame at 7 p.m.
