St. John's Hosts Fairfield In 2010 Home Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - After opening the 2010 season with 19 games on the road, the St. John's softball team returns to Queens, N.Y., to open its home schedule Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Fairfield at Red Storm Field.

The Red Storm and the Stags have faced off in 27 games all-time and STJ leads the series 15-12. STJ is 3-2 against FU at Red Storm Field. The last time the two teams met was March 25, 2008, when St. John's defeated Fairfield, 10-4. Kat Lawrence, then a freshman, earned the win after striking out 10 and allowing one earned run over six innings. The Red Storm is 1-1 against the Stags under the direction of fourth-year head coach Amy Kvilhaug.
STJ is 8-2 in its last 10 home openers. The Red Storm has outscored opponents 48-24 in those games. St. John's is 2-1 in home openers under Kvilhaug.
St. John's will next play local rival Hoftra on March 24 at Red Storm Field. The game is scheduled to start a 3 p.m.
MAKING THEIR HOME DEBUTS…
Amber Curry (Fr., 2B, Concord, Calif): Curry has started all 19 games this season at second base. She is hitting .311 with one home run, six RBI and12 runs scored. She has also stolen five bases in five attempts and recorded 27 putouts.
Britni Hawley (So., IF, Arlington, Vt.): Hawley joined the team earlier this semester. She has scored two runs as a pinch-runner, including a rundown escape against Liberty Feb. 14.
Dominique Marcelino (Fr., C/1B, Madison, Conn.): Marcelino has appeared in 13 games with six starts. She hit her first career home run off Creighton's All-American pitcher Tara Oltman in STJ's 9-5 win over the Bluejays on March 12.
Chrissy Montez (Fr., SS, Santa Clara, Calif): Montez has started all 19 games this season at shortstop. She owns a .302 batting average with one home run, six RBI and 12 runs scored. She has four stolen bases and 29 putouts.
Jordan Tingley (Fr., P, Coventry, R.I.): Tingley has appeared in seven games with three starts. She earned her first career win when she tossed 3.2 shuout innings of relief with three strikeouts against Creighton on March 12.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
The Stags are 7-8 this season.
Fairfield has no shortage of experience as seven of its 18 players are seniors. The team also features four juniors.
The Stags have their top three hitters from last season on their roster in senior Meghan Borst, senior Kristie Trifolis and Sophomore Kala Marth. Borst led the team in 2009 with a .278 batting average, four home runs and 29 RBI. Trifolis hit .275 with two home runs and 20 RBI. Marth hit .271 with three home runs and 25 RBI.
Fairfield also returns its top pitcher from last season, junior Sarah Minice. In 2009, Minice went 18-12 with a 2.37 ERA and 165 strikeouts in 212.2 innings of work.
The Stags are coming of a weekend when they went 2-1 at the South Florida Tournament. On March13, they beat Toledo, 4-3, and defeated tournament host and BIG EAST member USF, 3-2. Fairfield closed out the tournament with a 13-0 loss to Southern Illnois.
In the South Florida Tournament, Borst went 4-of-8 with three runs one RBI and four stolen bases. Her best performance came in Fairfield's 4-3 win over Toledo when she went 2-of-3 with two runs scored and three steals. Trifolis went 3-of-10 in the tournament with two runs scored and one double.
Mince appeared in all three games of the tournament with two starts, going 1-1. She tossed a 2.1 shutout innnings with five hits and three strikeouts against Toledo. Mince threw a complete game against USF, getting the win after tossing seven innings with six hits two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. She took the loss against Southern Illinois, throwing just 2.1 innings while giving up four runs and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
