St. John's Splits Pair Of Matches In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The St. John's women's tennis squad defeated St. Peter's, 4-0, in Jersey City Saturday before being edged by LIU, 4-3 in the nightcap. The Red Storm moves to 6-9 after Saturday's competitions.
Against the Peahens, St. John's surrendered just three points in four matches for the 4-0 victory.
In doubles, Joanna Zwirbulis and Ksenia Mikhaylova defeated Jessica Nowodrozki and Andrea Collomb, 8-0 to bring home the doubles point.
Ira Aleksova won in No. 1 singles over Krysten Chen, 6-1, 6-0 and Joanna Zwirbulis notched the victory against Joniesa Williams, 6-0, 6-1 before Ece Firat finished the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Linnea Enoh Janasson.
The 4-0 victory was the second straight shut out for the Red Storm and the third in four matches.
After taking on St. Peter's, the Red Storm moved on to face LIU. The Blackbirds claimed the doubles point with three wins before a struggle in singles competition would rely on the final match for a decision.
At No. 1, Aleksova fell in straight sets to Selma Babic to give LIU the 2-0 match advantage before Zwirbulis recorded her 12th win of the season with a defeat of Linn Sjorgen, 6-3, 6-3.
Aleksandra Pavlovic won over Ece Firat at No. 3 for a 3-1 Blackbird lead before St. John's launched a comeback. Mikhaylova captured the No. 4 point with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Taysha Blessington and Nakita Austin got the straight-set victory over Stephanie Elie, 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 3-3. Alyssa Liantonio fought to a third set before falling to Dara Lahens, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 for the No. 6 singles point.
St. John's faces BIG EAST rival Villanova on Thursday, April 1 at 1:30 p.m. in Villanova, Pa.
