Red Storm Opens BIG EAST Play At UConn

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team heads to Storrs, Conn., to open BIG EAST play with a three-game set against Connecticut April 2-3. The teams will play a single game at 3 p.m. on April 2 and a doubleheader starting at noon on April 3.

The Red Storm is looking to build upon a historic 2009 run in the BIG EAST. Last season, St. John's notched a program-record 11 wins in the BIG EAST and the team returned to the conference tournament for the first time since 2006.
St. John's has played Connecticut 66 times in history, marking the third-most games against any STJ opponent. UConn leads the series 53-13.
The two teams split their doubleheader last season in Queens. St. John's won the first game, 2-0, behind Linzee Sumrall's six-strikeout, complete-game shutout of the Huskies. UConn won the second game, 14-2.
St. John's next travels to Syracuse, N.Y., on April 7 for a doubleheader against Syracuse starting at 3 p.m.
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT
The Huskies are 9-16 this season,1-2 at home and 1-2 in BIG EAST play. UConn is coming off an 8-2 win over Central Connecticut State on March 31.
UConn went 1-2 in a three-game series against Georgetown March 27-28. The Huskies fell to the Hoyas, 6-4 and 8-5, in a double header on March 27. Connecticut pulled out a 4-3 win over 10 frames on March 28.
The Huskies are led offensively by junior second baseman Julianne Towers, who has team highs of four home runs, 14 RBI and a .305 batting average. Sophomore third baseman/DP Amy DeLuca ranks second on the team with a .303 average to go with three doubles, one home run and six RBI. Sophomore catcher Amy Vaughan is second on the team with 12 RBI.
Connecticut's top pitcher is freshman righty Kiki Saveriano, who is 5-6 on the season with a 2.27 ERA. Saveriano has 70 strikeouts over 77.0 innings. Senior righty Tricia Sullivan has a 3.22 ERA and ranks second on the team with 67.1 innings and 49 strikeouts.
