Cincinnati, Ohio - The St. John's baseball team rallied from a 4-3 deficit to plate three runs in the final two innings and defeat Cincinnati, 6-4. Jimmy Parque was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Jeremy Baltz, Greg Hopkins and Jimmy Brennan were each 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead St. John's (20-12, 6-5). Matt Carasiti (5-2) allowed just one hit in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. T.J. Jones had a solo home run and Jimmy Jacquot and Chris Peters had an RBI apiece to pace Cincinnati (18-15, 4-7).
After being kept off the board despite drawing three walks in the first inning, Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Mikel Huston led off the frame with a single before Justin Riddel doubled inside the third base bag. A fielding error, however, allowed Huston to score as Riddel moved to third. Nick Cenatiempo, however, picked up his third strikeout of the game and induced a groundout to strand the runner at third base.
St. John's responded with three runs in the third inning. Brennan reached on an infield single and moved to second on a Scott Ferrara sacrifice bunt. Parque then tied the game with an RBI double off the base of the wall in right center. Joe Panik immediately followed with an RBI triple to left center, but came around to score on an errant throw as St. John's took a 3-1 lead.
Jones led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to left field as the Bearcats closed to within 3-2.
Cincinnati chased Cenatiempo from the game and scored two runs in the fifth inning. Jones walked with one out and moved to third on a Coleman single that chased Cenatiempo from the game. Carasiti entered and Jacquot lifted a sacrifice fly into center field to tie the game before Peters added an RBI single to give Cincinnati a 4-3 lead.
Carasiti walked the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but rebounded to get a pop out and a strikeout before Jamel Scott was thrown out trying to steal home.
St. John's retook the lead, 5-4, in the eight inning. Parque led off with an infield single and moved to second on a groundout. Baltz then chased Smith from the game with an RBI double to the gap in left center. Sam Slavik entered and induced a fly out as Baltz tagged up and moved to third. Hopkins then plated Baltz with the go-ahead run, but was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
The Red Storm manufactured an insurance run to take a 6-4 lead in the ninth. Matt Wessinger led off with an infield single and moved to second on a passed ball. After advancing to third on a Pat Talbut sacrifice bunt, Wessinger scored on a Brennan squeeze bunt single.
Daniel Burawa allowed two base runners in the ninth, but racked up three strikeouts to notch his sixth save.
St. John's concludes its series against Cincinnati with a 1 p.m. game on April 18.
