QUEENS, N.Y. - After leading the Red Storm to one of its best seasons in history, St. John's women's basketball standout Da'Shena Stevens was named to the Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention team.
Stevens, a 2009-10 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region I All-American, led the Red Storm to a 25-7, 12-4 BIG EAST mark. The 25 wins are the most in 27 years for STJ and the 12 BIG EAST victories tied the program high. Her stellar play guided St. John's to its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and to a program-tying No. 15 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
The sophomore led the team in scoring and rebounding, nearly averaging a double-double with 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds. The first team All-BIG EAST selection also posted a team-high 25 double-digit scoring games, six 20-point performances and six double-doubles. Stevens, who was a Naismith Trophy Midseason candidate, finished the year as the eighth-leading scorer and ninth-leading rebounder in the BIG EAST. In her two-year career, Stevens has amassed 865 points and 467 rebounds.
A native of Stamford, Conn., Stevens had two of her best games of the year against top ranked teams. She scored a team-high 25 points and grabbed 11 boards against then-No. 4/4 North Carolina on Dec. 6. In the 76-71 upset win over then-No. 4/3 Notre Dame on Feb. 16, Stevens recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 boards, leading the Red Storm to its biggest win in program history.
