SCARSDALE, N.Y (June 16, 2010) - Evan Beirne won the 73rd William Rice Hochster Memorial Tournament on Tuesday at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.
Beirne battled back from a slow start to card a 1-under 69 in the first round. He shot a 3-over 73 in the second round to finish at 2-over 142 for a one-stroke win over Peter Wilson.
"It's a really tough golf course," Beirne said. "I actually got off to a really bad start. I was 3-over after three holes and I battled back and ended up shooting 1-under. To play four-under-par golf my last 15 holes of the first round on that course, it's really good. It was a tough course."
Joe Saladino, who played for the Red Storm from 1998-2002, took fourth place in the tournament with a 75-73-148 (+8). Recent STJ alum Mike Ballo Jr. also competed in the tournament and finished tied for 15th at 82-72-154 (+14).
The win marks just the latest triumph for Beirne, who has been on a tear since tying for second place at the BIG EAST Championship this past April. On May 15, the St. John's men's golf rising senior set a new course record at New Haven Country Club (Hamden, Conn.) with a 13-under 58. On May 25, he won the 7th Russell C. Palmer Cup at Rolling Hills Country Club.
"You work hard and you try to win every tournament you play," he said. "That's the goal for all golfers. But to actually kind of do that is just crazy and it's more than you ever expect. It can't be something that can be taken for granted. I've just got to keep working hard and put myself in position to keep winning."
Beirne and Ballo will next compete in the 49th Annual Northeast Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament held June 23-26 at Wannamoisett Country Club (Rumford, R.I.). The four-round, 72-hole tournament is considered one of the most prestigious amateur golf tournaments in the country and past winners include past and current PGA stars Chris Perry (1982), David Duval (1992), Luke Donald (2000-01) and Anthony Kim (2004).
Beirne, Ballo and Mark Costanza will compete in the 2010 "Ike" Team Championship June 28-29 at Metropolis Country Club (White Plains, N.Y.).
