RUMFORD, R.I. - Recent St. John's men's golf alum Mike Ballo Jr. took third place in the 49th Northeast Amateur Invitational at Wannamoisett Country Club. Red Storm rising senior Evan Beirne tied for 28th.
Ballo, who entered play Saturday tied for first place, finished with a 66-69-68-71-274 (-2) and was just one of three players to complete the prestigious tournament under par. He totaled 12 birdies over four rounds of play. Ballo remained in the top three each round of the tournament. He sat tied for second place at the end of the first and second rounds and moved into a tie for the lead with eventual winner Joseph Bramlett (6-under 270) in Friday's third round.
Beirne, who already has two summer victories, stayed in the hunt for much of the tournament, carding a 70-70-73-71-284 (+8) and totaling seven birdies.
