QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's alum Anthony Varvaro, a 12th round selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 2005 draft, has been promoted to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League. The promotion for Varvaro gives the Red Storm a pair of alums in the Triple-A ranks as Rob Delaney, a 2006 free agent signee with the Minnesota Twins, pitches for the Rochester Red Wings of the International League.
Varvaro tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his Triple-A debut and has worked 2.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout in two appearances for the Rainiers. The righty earned the promotion after going 1-3 with nine saves and a 3.20 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Double-A West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx of the Southern League. Varvaro, a 2009 Southern League All-Star, racked up 46 strikeouts in 39.1 innings and allowed just a .194 average this season for the Diamond Jaxx.
Delaney, meanwhile, has been with the Red Wings since being called up in 2009. This season the righty is 7-5 with a 5.59 ERA in 42 relief appearances. Delaney has 63 strikeouts in 56.1 innings and is limiting opponents to a .259 average.
Both Delaney and Varvaro were named to the 40-man MLB rosters of their respective teams prior to the 2010 baseball season.
