QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team tees off its fall season next month. The Red Storm will compete in five tournaments this fall, including two hosted events in New York and Florida.
"We are going to stay really close to home and try to dominate our area right here," said head coach Frank Darby, who enters his 16th year leading the Red Storm men's golf program. "We are going to prepare for the spring season by playing really well in the fall. We've got good fields at all of the events and it should be an exciting fall season."
The Red Storm opens fall play as the host of The 2010 McLaughlin, held Sept. 17-18 at Bethpage State Park's Red Course (Farmingdale, N.Y.). St. John's tied for fifth at The 2009 McLaughlin with an 858 team score. Evan Beirne carded a season-low 66 in the second round and tied for sixth place.
"The great course, field and staff at Bethpage make The McLaughlin a special event for us," Darby said.
St. John's stays in the Northeast for its next three tournaments. The Red Storm heads to Bull's Bridge Golf Club (South Kent, Conn.) to compete in the Hartford Hawk Invitational Sept. 27-28. From Oct. 2-3, St. John's takes part in Yale's MacDonald Cup in New Haven, Conn. The Course at Yale, which opened in 1926, is considered one of the top college golf courses in the nation.
The team competes in the Big 5 Championship for the second consecutive year when it heads to Plymouth Country Club (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) for the 36-hole, Temple-hosted tournament Oct. 9-10. Two Red Storm golfers were successful in last year's Big 5 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickson Course (Flourtown, Pa.). Recent alum Mike Ballo Jr. took second place with a 72-71-143 (+1) and Beirne finished sixth after shooting a 72-74-146 (+4).
The Red Storm closes out its fall slate Oct. 22-24 as the host of the Mission Inn Intercollegiate at Mission Inn Resort's Las Colinas Golf Course (Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.). In 2009, Peter Ballo shined at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. Competing on the resort's El Campéon Golf Course, Ballo tied for second after carding a 76-66-70-212 (-1) and the Red Storm took fifth place.
