St. John's Hosts Stony Brook In 2010 Home Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team hosts local rival Stony Brook on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. in the 2010 home opener in Carnesecca Arena. STJ leads the all-time series 10-1 over the Seawolves. SBU captured its only win against the Red Storm on September 3, 2002 in Queens with a 3-2 victory. St. John's won last season's matchup 3-1 on the road.
The Red Storm (3-1) is coming off a successful start to the 2010 campaign, posting the best record at the Army Invitational. STJ defeated Iona, Fairleigh Dickinson and host institution Army in the opening weekend of play. New Hampshire was the only squad to defeat the Red Storm at the invitational.
Stony Brook struggled in its opening weekend, posting a 0-3 record against tough competition at the annual Golden Gopher Invitational. The Seawolves recorded losses against No. 6 Minnesota, Marquette and Denver.

STORMWATCH
The Red Storm (3-1) posted the top record of the Army Invitational, defeating Iona, Fairleigh Dickinson and host institution Army.
STJ opened the invitational with a 3-1 win over Iona.
Polish transfers Sabina Papala and Paulina Piegza led the squad in kills, picking up 12 apiece against the Gaels.
Following a 3-1 loss to UNH, the Red Storm came back to sweep Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0, on Saturday.
Junior transfer Brunna Kronbauer led the squad with 13 kills and only two attacking errors. Kronbauer recorded a .440 attacking percentage.
St. John's closed the tournament with a thrilling five-set win over host Army.
Kronbauer once again led the squad with her first double-double of the season, recording 24 kills and 15 digs.
Sophomore setter Gabriela Petkova tallied 170 assists at the invitational.
Freshman libero Korina Yee leads the team with 41 digs.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES
The Seawovles went 0-3 in the first weekend of action, falling to Marquette, No. 6 Minnesota and Denver in the annual Golden Gopher Invite.
Junior hitter Alicia Nelson led the squad with 37 kills.
Sophomore setter Corinne Perry leads the team with 78 assists.
Stony Brook finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 13-13, including a 5-5- mark in AE play
The Seawolves return seven letterwinners from a season ago, including 2009 All-America East second team selection, senior middle blocker Ashley Headen and 2009 America East All-Rookie selection, Corinne Perry.
Headen led the team in blocks (92) and attack percentage (.328) last season.
Perry dished out 756 total assists a season ago and her 8.22 assists/set ranked fifth in the conference.
UP NEXT
STJ will host the annual St. John's Classic from Sept. 3-4.
The Red Storm will square off against local rivals Columbia, Manhattan and St. Francis.
STJ is a combined 18-3 against those three opponents all-time.
St. John's will also face Denver for the first time in program history.
