QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball's newest 1,000th-point scorer, junior Da'Shena Stevens, was honored by the BIG EAST as she was tabbed to the league's honor roll on Monday after averaging 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game at the Maryland Terrapin Classic last week.
It is Stevens' first honor of the year, after being named to the BIG EAST's preseason All-Conference team. The Stamford, Conn., native was honored four times by the BIG EAST in 2009-10 and was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week twice in 2007-08.
Stevens helped St. John's to its 81-66 victory over Liberty on Dec. 28 after scoring 20 points to go along with five assists and four steals. The junior forward also scored her 1,000th-career point in the win, off the first of two free throws that tied the game at the end of the first half. She became the 17th player in St. John's history to accomplish the feat. It was her first 20-point game of the year.
Overall, she shot 47.8 percent from the field and 76.5 percent from the foul line, including a career-high 10-for-12 shooting effort against Liberty.
Stevens also had a 15-point, seven-rebound performance against the then-No. 18 Maryland Terrapins.
She was named to the Maryland Terrapin All-Tournament Team for her efforts in College Park, Md.
Up next, St. John's plays Louisville on Tuesday, Jan. 4 it its first nationally televised game of the year. The Red Storm and Cardinals will tip off at 7 p.m. on the CBS College Sports Network with the play-by-play called by Dave Ryan and color commentary by Debbie Antonelli. The game will be played at the brand new KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
