MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (Oct. 11, 2011)-- The St. John's women's golf team won the 2011 Richmond Spider Invitational on Tuesday, completing a nine-stroke comeback in the third and final round. Sophomores Harin Lee and Stephanie Eybers garnered top-10 finishes, while juniors Jennifer Neville and Sebin Kim got top-20 finishes for the Red Storm.
"The girls played really well today, and were able to shoot some really good scores and get the win," head coach Ambry Bishop said.
St. John's entered the day nine strokes off the pace of leader and host Richmond University, but posted a 297 (+9)--the best round by any team during the tournament--to claim a six-stroke victory over Brown University.
Lee, the September BIG EAST Player of the Month posted a two-under 70--one of just four under-par rounds during the three-round event--to capture third place with a three-round score of 220(+4). This marks the third-straight top-three finish for Lee to open the fall season.
"Harin had another great round, and has been playing really great golf for us to open the fall," Bishop said.
Eybers claimed her first career top-ten finish after posting 75-76-78--229 (+13) to finish in a tie for eighth place.
"I don't think Stephanie was extremely happy with the way she played today, but she still turned in a great tournament," Bishop said.
Neville finished with 80-77-74--231(+15) to claim 12th place, while Kim posted an 82-74-77--233 (+17) to claim 18th. Senior Ellen Oswald shot 82-79-76--237 (+21) to finish in a tie for 26th and help propel the Red Storm to its first team title since 2009.
The win is the first for STJ since the 2009 Sacred Heart Invitational, and is the fifth team title in the Bishop Era, including the 2005 BIG EAST Championship.
"This is a great boost for our team and program," Bishop said. "This is something that we've been getting close to for a few years now, and this gives us a lot of momentum."
Junior Mariana Barrios tied for 39th place, competing as an individual, after shooting 87-78-83. The Red Storm finish up its fall campaign at the Rutgers Women's Invitational Oct. 14-15.
"There are a lot of good teams in the field at Rutgers, but we're coming in with a lot of confidence after this win," Bishop said.
