QUEENS, N.Y. - Following successful surgery to treat prostate cancer last month, Red Storm head men's basketball coach Steve Lavin continues to follow a modified schedule with regard to his coaching duties.
Lavin participated in team practices sessions this week, in addition to the Red Storm's team Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday and visit to the St. John's Bread and Life Soup Kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, on Wednesday. He was not on the sidelines for Tuesday's 63-48 win over St. Francis (N.Y.), however, and is not expected to be on the bench as the Red Storm takes on Northeastern on Saturday (4 p.m., ESPN3).
"Naturally, I have to continue to be mindful of my stamina and how I utilize energy as I recuperate from surgery," said Lavin. "I am working closely with our staff and players as we continue to build our team in preparation for the rigors of conference play. We are fortunate to have a first-rate group of assistants with the experience, expertise and basketball acumen to move us forward during this period of recovery. I am confident we won't miss a beat."
Lavin has coached in four of the Red Storm's six games this season (2-2). Assistant coach Mike Dunlap will take the Red Storm reins, as he did for St. John's two exhibition wins, its season-opening victory over William & Mary (Nov. 7, 74-59) and its win over St. Francis (N.Y.) (Nov. 22, 63-48).
Lavin's surgery was performed on Oct. 6, 2011, by Peter T. Scardino, M.D., of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.
"The most recent blood work from this past week indicates that I am cancer-free and progressing nicely," said Lavin. "I will continue on a modified schedule as we move down the line toward a full recovery."
