QUEENS, N.Y. - After injuring her right knee in Sunday's Maggie Dixon Classic, St. John's junior point guard Nadirah McKenith will sit out part of the 2011-12 regular season.
McKenith came out of the game after injuring her right knee with 5:40 left to play. She was later examined by Dr. Answorth Allen from the Hospital of Special Surgery in Manhattan. An MRI was obtained and it has been determined McKenith had sprained her right knee.
The junior point guard left the game against the Lady Bears with a near double-double with nine points and seven assists. McKenith was the Red Storm's leading scorer through nine games, as she went into the Baylor contest with an average of 13.4 points per game.
The junior from Newark, N.J., has made an impact as the Red Storm's floor general since she stepped on the court at Carnesecca Arena. As a rookie she was a final candidate for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award. To date, McKenith continues to advance in St. John's all-time record books. With 340 assists, she is No. 9 in the Red Storm's career records.
As St. John's will be missing its point guard, the Red Storm has a bright spot on the horizon as forward Da'Shena Stevens is expected to return to the line up this weekend for the Red Storm's fourth annual Chartwells Holiday Classic. Stevens will see her first game action of the season against Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Dec. 17. St. John's (5-5) has been playing without its senior forward for the first 10 games as she was rehabbing an offseason knee injury. Stevens returned to practice on Dec. 2.
Stevens is one of St. John's most highly honored players, she was the 2009 BIG EAST Freshman of the year, a two-time All-BIG EAST player, three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree, a 2010-11 preseason Naismith Trophy Award Watch list member, two-time All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association member and 2010 All-Met Player of the Year, 2010 Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and WBCA Region I All-American. Stevens is the No. 11 on St. John's all-time career scoring list with 1,243 points and No. 6 on St. John's all-time rebounding charts with 673 boards.
