QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's junior center fielder Kristi Cady was named to the first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the 2011 season as announced by the conference office Monday evening.
Cady enjoyed a strong weekend in the Pirate Classic, hitting .467 (7-of-15) with two home runs, one double, seven RBI, five runs and three stolen bases. Her slugging percentage for the tournament was .933 and her on-base percentage was .556. She was also hit by a pitch three times.
Cady played a major role in St. John's wins over Kent State and East Carolina on Feb. 18. Against Kent State, she went 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBI, one double and one stolen base, lifting St. John's to a 3-2 victory. Cady enjoyed her best game of the young season later that evening against tournament-host East Carolina. She propelled the Red Storm to a thrilling nine-inning, 6-5 win with two home runs, three RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base. Cady's two-run blast in the first inning gave STJ a 2-1 advantage. Her third-inning solo shot to left center extended the Red Storm's lead to 5-1.
On the season, Cady is hitting a team-best .429 (12-of-28) with two home runs, one double, one triple, nine RBI, eight runs, four walks and three stolen bases.
This week's BIG EAST recognition marks the second time Cady has been named to on the conference's Weekly Honor Roll. The Hamilton, N.J., native was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 15, 2010, following her standout play over nine games in Arizona when she hit .435 (10-of-23) with two homers and seven RBI.
The St. John's softball team next travels to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in Texas Tech's Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic from Feb. 25-27. The Red Storm will face Wichita State, Texas Tech and Northern Illinois.
