QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sophomore shortstop Chrissy Montez was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Feb. 28 as announced by the conference office on Monday.
The conference honor is the first of Montez's career and is a result of her outstanding weekend at Texas Tech's Jeannine Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas. Over five games from Feb. 25-27, Montez hit .500 (7-of-14) with a grand slam, a double, seven RBI, six runs scored and two walks. Her slugging percentage was. .786 and her on-base percentage was .529. Defensively, she played error-free ball with five putouts and four assists.
Montez played a key role in St. John's 7-5 win against Wichita State on Feb. 25, going 1-of-3 with one run and five RBI. With one out in the fifth, Montez hit a sac fly to right field, plating teammate Chelsea Durning and extending the Red Storm's lead to 2-0. Montez's grand slam to right in the top of the seventh was the first of her career and it proved to be the difference in the game, giving the Red Storm a 7-1 advantage to withstand the Shockers' four-run surge in the bottom of the seventh.
On Feb. 26, Montez went 2-of-4 with one run scored as St. John's late rally against Wichita State on Feb. 26 fell short in a 10-6 loss. With two on and no outs in the fifth, Montez hit a single up the middle and later scored STJ's third run in a five-run inning.
Montez recorded her second mulit-RBI game of the tournament against No. 21/19 Texas Tech, St. John's second opponent on Feb. 26. She drew a walk and scored St. John's second run in the first inning. In the second inning, Montez hit a two-RBI double to left center, giving the Red Storm a 5-0 advantage. TTU would come back and win the game 19-8 in five innings.
Over two games against No. 21/19 Texas Tech, Montez hit .500 (2-of-4) with two RBI, one double, two runs scored and one walk.
She finished her weekend on a strong note going 2-of-3 with two runs scored and one walk in STJ's 10-7 loss to Northern Illinois. Montez scored STJ's first run of its three-run sixth inning. In St. John's four-run seventh, Montez drew a walk and scored on Jackie Reed's grand slam to left field.
On the season, Montez is hitting .409 (18-of-44) with one home run, one double, one triple, 16 RBI, nine runs scored, three walks and three stolen bases. Her .409 batting average and 16 RBI lead the team. She is on a six-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 12 of STJ's 14 games. Montez also has four multi-hit games and four mulit-RBI games this year.
The St. John's softball team returns to action this weekend when it heads to Fort Meyers, Fla., to compete in the FGCU Tournament from March 5-6. STJ will face St. Francis (Pa.), Colgate, Tennessee-Martin and Florida Gulf Coast. The Red Storm will travel to Clearwater, Fla., to face the Dutch National Team in an exhibition game before taking part in the USF-Under Armour Showcase from March 11-13. In the USF-hosted event, the team will play Saint Joseph's, Quinnipiac, Toledo, Maryland and Massachusetts.
