QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's senior forward Centhya "Coco" Hart was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, for the first time in her four-year career, as she led St. John's in scoring during the final week of regular season play.
Hart averaged 12.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game and shot 55.6 percent from the field. She tied junior Da'Shena Stevens for a team-high 15 points at Villanova (Feb. 22) to lead St. John's (20-9, 9-7 BIG EAST) to a 57-46 victory at The Pavilion. On Saturday, celebrating her senior day, Hart scored 13 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor. Against West Virginia in Morgantown (Feb. 28), Hart netted eight points to go along with six rebounds.
In addition to her offensive efforts, Hart had just one turnover in a 2-1 week for St. John's.
For the season, Hart finished as the fourth-highest scorer with 8.3 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. The Memphis, Tenn., native forced opposing teams into 20 turnovers, by drawing 20 charges down low.
Hart and the Red Storm will head to the 2011 BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, in a quest for its fourth-straight postseason tournament appearance. St. John's drew a No. 7 seed in the tournament and will have a bye for Friday's first round. The Red Storm will play the winner of the No. 10 vs. No. 15 seed, West Virginia vs. Cincinnati at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.
The 2011 BIG EAST Championships will be head coach Kim Barnes Arico's eighth trip to the conference tournament. During her nine-year tenure, the only time St. John's did not make the league championships was 2002-03, her first season at the helm. In 2008-09, the BIG EAST began admitting all 16 teams to the championships.
The Red Storm finished the 2010-11 regular season winning six of its last nine games. As of the Feb. 28 rankings, St. John's was receiving votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls, had a No. 32 NCAA RPI rating, and has had key BIG EAST victories over then-No. 16/17 Georgetown (Feb. 13) and Rutgers (Feb. 1), both with RPI's less than 25. STJ opened the season with a 64-50 victory over current No. 21 Marist (Nov. 12) at Kansas State.
