Ballo Ties For Fourth In BIG EAST Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Sophomore Peter Ballo closed out the 2011 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship with an even-par 71 to tie for fourth place at 4-over 217 on Tuesday at Innisbrook Resort & Spa's Copperhead Course. The St. John's men's golf team took 11th.
Ballo finished five strokes back of Notre Dame's Max Scodro, who won the individual crown at 2-under 212. Ballo bounced back from a rough start when he shot 3-over 38 on the back nine, which included a birdie on the par-5 14th hole. He shot even par on the front nine after getting an eagle on the par-5 first hole and a birdies on the par-3 fourth and the par-4 ninth. He was St. John's most consistent golfer, tying for 15th with 34 pars. His 3.00 (E) scoring average on par 3s tied for fourth, his 4.22 (+6) average on par 4s tied for 12th and his 4.83 (-2) average on par 5s tied for ninth. Ballo finished at 75-71-71--217 (+4) and his tie for fourth is his best finish on the year. The Stamford, Conn., native has three top-10 finishes on the year, including a tie for seventh in The MacDonald Cup and a tie for fifth in the Caribbean Classic.
The Red Storm concluded play with a 306-299-306--911 (+59) to take 11th place. Notre Dame took the team championship at 24-over 876.
Senior Mark Costanza tied for 29th after carding a 74-85-78--227 (+14). Costanza birdied the par-3 eighth hole and the par-5 14th in Tuesday's final round. Costanza's eight birdies for the tournaments tied for third and his 3.07 (+1) scoring average on par 3s tied for 10th.
Fifth year senior captain Evan Beirne tied for 40th at 79-75-77--231 (+18). He posted birdies on the par-5 first hole and the par-4 sixth hole.
Sophomore Pat Wilson finished 53rd at 79-78-80--237 (+24). He had a birdie on the par-3 15th hole in the final round. Freshman Ryan McCormick tied for 54 with a 78-78-82--238 (+25). McCormick birdied the par-4 10th hole
