QUEENS, N.Y. - After racking up a career-high 15 strikeouts in his first-career complete game shutout, sophomore Kyle Hansen has earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors. The honor is the second conference accolade of the season for the righty, who had previously earned a spot on the weekly honor roll. Hansen has four conference honors in his career, including a pair of Pitcher of the Week selections and a pair of weekly honor roll mentions.
The righty was also honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as one of the Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week.
Hansen allowed just four hits, walked none and worked six 1-2-3 innings in the 6-0 win against Notre Dame. The righty had three strikeouts in the sixth inning, two in the first, second, fourth, seventh and eighth, and one in both the third and ninth innings. Hansen, who surrendered just a .133 (4-for-30) batting average, did not allow a runner past second base.
The complete game shutout was the first for a St. John's pitcher since Matt Tosoni blanked Winthrop, 2-0, on Feb. 26, 2008. The 15-strikeout performance also marked the most strikeouts for a Red Storm pitcher since Anthony Varvaro racked up 17 against Pittsburgh on April 3, 2005.
Hansen currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in strikeouts (68), fifth in opponent batting average (.204) and sixth in ERA (2.42).
St. John's (22-13) returns to action on April 27, traveling to Hofstra for a 3 p.m. game.
