QUEENS, N.Y. - Former St. John's pitcher Scott Barnes has been promoted to the Columbus Clippers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 8th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Barnes was traded to the Cleveland organization in 2009 for Major Leaguer Ryan Garko.
Barnes made his debut with Columbus on April 19, striking out three and allowing four runs, three earned, in 5.0 innings of work in a start against the Louisville Bats.
The lefty began the 2011 season with the Double-A Akron Aeros and went 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work in two starts.
After going 6-11 with a 5.22 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 138.0 innings of work for the Aeros in 2010, Barnes played for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. The lefty went 4-1 with a 3.65 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 24.2 innings to help the Javelinas reach the AFL championship game.
Barnes was first called up Double-A at the end of the 2009 season, going 2-2 in six starts as the Aeros won the Eastern League championship.
St. John's now has three players in the Triple-A ranks as Barnes joins Rob Delaney and Anthony Varvaro.
Delaney, who originally signed with the Minnesota Twins as a free agent in 2006, is 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA in eight appearances for the Durham Bulls, affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. The reliever has 14 strikeouts in 13.0 innings of work. Varvaro, who was drafted by Seattle in the 12th round of the 2005 MLB Draft, is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in six appearances for the Gwinnett Braves, affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The reliever has five strikeouts in 8.0 innings and is limiting the opposition to a .080 batting average.
